Kwartaal 9: speeddaten en flowcharts

Mijn karakter heeft een maatje gevonden: Chadwyck, het karakter van klasgenootje Stéphanie. Dit oude mannetje is helemaal alleen in zijn grot, dwangmatig aan het spelen op zijn orgel. Hij bespeelt het orgel en daarmee ook de stad die in zijn orgel leeft (binnen zijn fantasie/eigen wereldje). Octavius, mijn vriendelijke maar dikke ukelelekat, komt vanuit de vrolijke natuur (buiten) de duistere en grijze grot binnen, omdat hij de orgelmuziek hoort. Alhoewel Chadwyck eerst schuchter reageert, worden de twee beste vriendjes.

We hebben voor dit kwartaal een gezamenlijke blog aangemaakt (vereist onderdeel van de opdracht): Stephaneetje-tumblr waar ik meer zal posten dan hier. Geen zorgen, de belangrijkste stappen en plaatjes worden jullie hier niet ontzegd!

The character I designed has found a mate: Chadwyck, the character of my classmate Stéphanie. This old little man lives in a cave, all by himself and his organ, which he plays compulsively. By doing this, he also breathes life into the (imaginairy) city that is situated in his organ. Octavius, my friendly but fat ukelele cat, enters his cave. The world outside the cave is colourful and light, while the cave itself is dark and grey. Octavius follows the music. Although Chadwyck is a little reticent at first, he and Octavius become best friends during our narrative.

As part as our assignment, we created a communal blog: Stephaneetje-tumblr where I will upload more pictures and information than I will do here. But don't worry, I will not refrain you from the most important steps and images!

Na een eerste verkenning van alle mogelijkheden qua verhaallijn en interactiviteit hebben we een flowchart uitgeschreven en uitgewerkt. Ons verhaal bevat nu twee keuzemomenten, waarbij alleen de keuzes van het tweede moment consequenties hebben voor het einde. Er zijn drie mogelijke eindes, die wel alle drie dezelfde essentie bevatten: Chadwyck leert de genegenheid van Octavius accepteren en beseft dat de stad slechts een illusie is (een happy end). Ook hebben we beide wat testjes gedaan voor de achtergronden, en nog wat animatietestjes. Momenteel zijn we bezig aan het uitwerken van het definitieve storyboard.

After a first exploration on the narrative and interactive possibilities, we composed a flowchart. Our narrative contains two moments of choice, and only the choice you make at the second moment implies consequences for the story line. There are three possible endings, all carrying the same essence: Chadwyck learns to accept the affection from Octavius and realises that the city is nothing but an illusion (a happy end). We have also tried out some backgrounds, and we have both done some more (small) animation tests. We are currently working on our final storyboard.

Kwartaal 9: interactief verhaal (eerste weken)

De vakantie is voorbij, school is weer begonnen. Dit kwartaal gaan we in duo's werken aan een interactief narratief, maar eerst ontwerpt elke student een eigen karakter (diertje, mensje, voorwerp - of zelfs een combinatie van die). Een animatiekwartaal dus. Na een eerste verkenning van figuurtjes herinnerde ik me de ukelelekat die ik vorig jaar een keer willekeurig geschilderd had. Dat vond ik eigenlijk veel leuker dan alle andere schetsen die ik tot dan toe gemaakt had.

Summer holiday is over, school had begun. This term, we are asked to make an interactive narrative in pairs, for which each student first has to design his or her own character (which can be an animal, human, an object - or even a combination of these three). After a first exploration of forms and characters, I remembered the ukelele cat I randomly painted last year. That appealed to me much more as a concept than the other ideas did.

 

 

Dit wordt hem ongeveer: Kapitein Octavius (van "octaaf"), de ukelelekat met overgewicht. Hij is zachtaardig, vrolijk en lief maar ook dik en lui. Nu we met een voor mij nieuw animeerprogramma gaan werken (TVPaint), heb ik ook een paar testjes gedaan met katten.

Meet my character: Captain Octavius (like an "octave"), the obese ukelele cat. Hij is kind, cheerful and nice but also very fat and lazy. We're going to work with a (to me) new animation program (TVPaint), and I've done a few fat cat tests.

Redactionele illustraties en tripje naar Bergen

Toen was mei alweer voor de helft voorbij, net als het achtste kwartaal, het laatste van dit schooljaar. Dit kwartaal staat in het kader van redactionele illustraties; beeldend werk dat bij tekst komt te staan in kranten, tijdschriften en dergelijke. Dat beeld en de tekst gaan een wisselwerking aan en kunnen elkaar versterken. Dit type illustratie vind ik erg interessant, omdat je op korte termijn moet kunnen leveren, en omdat er veel werk in is. Juist binnen de beperkingen (medium, publiek, ruimte) moet je zo creatief en communicatief mogelijk kunnen werken, wat ik wel een uitdaging vind.

Vorige week ben ik, samen met mijn moeder, een paar dagen naar Bergen, Noorwegen geweest. Dit voor oriëntatie wat betreft mijn uitwisseling/aanvraag voor Erasmusbeurs en daar hebben we nog een paar daagjes vakantie aan geplakt. Ik kreeg een rondleiding door de verschillende gebouwen van de kunstacademie daar, de KHiB, en ik leerde de stad al een beetje kennen. Het was erg leuk! Wel een beetje regenachtig, maar ja, dat krijg je met Bergen.

De eerste weken hebben we mogen oefenen met snel verschillende ideetjes te bedenken, omdat je daar doorgaans niet heel veel tijd voor hebt bij een redactionele illustratie. We moesten uit vijf opties een thema kiezen, en ik koos voetbal. Niet het meest logische thema voor mij, aangezien ik een haat-liefdeverhouding heb met voetbal. Dankzij een potje ballen op de middelbare school loop ik nog steeds met een knieblessure rond. Maar juist doordat het niet erg dicht bij mij ligt dwingt dit thema mij ook wel weer om creatief om te springen met de mogelijkheden. Een paar werkjes rondom voetbal die ik in de eerste paar weken gemaakt heb:

It's already the 16th of May as I am typing this. The first weeks of this term have already passed by so quickly; summer is coming up. Currently, we're busy making editorial illustrations. These visual works collaborate with text in magazines and newspapers in a way that both image and text can amplify each other's communicative strength. I find this kind of illustrations to be very interesting, as they need to be made within a very short amount of time and because there is a lot of work in this field. The challenge is to be creative and communicative as possible within the boundaries and restrictions (medium, public, space) set.

Last week, I went to Bergen, Norway for a few days with my mother. I wanted to explore the options for the exchange programme (Erasmus Programme) and we added a few days of tourist life to that. I was personally guided through the different buildings of the KHiB, the art academy in Bergen, and I got to know the city for a little bit. It was fun! A bit rainy as well, but hey, that's what you get in Bergen.

The first weeks of this term consisted of experimenting with coming up with a lot of ideas within a few minutes. We also had to chose a theme, a topic, out of the five options offered, and I choose soccer/football. Not the most logical one for me to choose, since I've had an knee injury for years thanks to this sport. But precisely because of this resentment towards soccer I am forced to be creative, to think out of the metaphorical box. These are some of the little works I made in the first weeks:

We zijn na de vakantieweek begonnen met de eerste redactionele illustratie. Het eerste artikel was een recensie van een boek van Ilja Pfeijffer. Er werd ons gevraagd een schrijversportret hierbij te maken. Een paar uitwerkingen:

After the break we started with the first editorial illustration. The first article was a review of one of Ilja Pfeijffer's books (he is a Dutch writer). We were asked to make a portrait:

Daarnaast heb ik nog een paar andere dingetjes gemaakt. Zo maakte ik dit acrylschilderijtje voor de les op woensdag met Aafke de Baat en ben ik dingetjes aan het uitproberen met Photoshop en Illustrator voor de "Art & Technology"-lessen. Met deze afbeeldingen sluit ik weer af. Tot de volgende update!

Besides these things I made some other images. I made this little painting with acrylic paint for the lessons with Aafke de Baat and I've been experimenting with Photoshop and Illustrator for my "Art & Technology"-lessons. These two images are the last ones of this blog post. Bye!

 

Expositie "Ontmoet me"

De expositie is alweer voorbij. Zo'n weekendje gaat toch best snel. En het was best een succes vond ik. Tot nu toe het grootste evenement dat ik voornamelijk zelf georganiseerd heb.

Our exposition "Ontmoet me" has come to an end. One weekend doesn't last that long after all.  If I may say so, it was quite a success. It was the biggest event up until now which I organised myself.

Beoordelingen kwartaal 7 en expositie

De beoordeling van afgelopen minorkwartaal is best goed verlopen. Ik had drie zevens en twee achten. Die achten waren voor de onderdelen "Proces" en "Presentatie". Momenteel kan ik nog geen plaatjes uploaden op deze blog, of althans, dat wil ik niet, want dan zou ik de verrassing wegnemen. We zijn als klas nu namelijk bezig, in samenwerking met Stichting Electron, met een expositie te organiseren! Daar zal een selectie van mijn werk te zien zijn, en dat van mijn minorgenootjes. De opening is op aanstaande vrijdagavond, 22 maart. Vanaf 19.30u is er inloop en om 20.00u zal de wethouder van Cultuur, Mobiliteit en Duurzaamheid, Selçuk Akinci, de expositie officieel openen. Zaterdag 23 en zondag 24 maart zal ons werk nog te bezichtigen zijn van 12.00u tot 18.00u.

Today, my work of this term got graded, and I received three sevens (out of ten) and two eights (out of ten). Those two eights were for "Process" and "Presentation". I will upload some images and text about my work in a week, because I don't want to give you any spoilers. We're currently organising an exposition, together with the Electron Foundation. You can see a selection of my work and that of my classmates. This friday evening, the 22th of March, the exposition will be opened. You're welcome at 19.30h and the alderman of Culture, Mobility and Sustainability, Selçuk Akinci, will officially open the exposition at 20.00h. Saturday the 23th and Sunday the 24th, you can visit the exposition from 12.00h till 18.00h. Be there!

Techniektestjes kwartaal 7

Het nieuwe kwartaal, de minorperiode, is begonnen, met als opdracht "zelfportret/persoonlijk manifest", waarbij je gebruik maakt van de grafische druktechnieken waarin we les krijgen. Ik plaatste hier al een aantal zelfportretjes, maar die zijn nog vrij simpel: van voren, alleen het hoofd. Ik heb van alles uitgeprobeerd en heb besloten dat het thema "(on)comfortabel" zal zijn, over dat ik me in steeds meer situaties op mijn gemak voel, maar dat dat nog altijd beter kan. Ik wil een ontwikkeling tonen, van de zes prenten een reeks maken. Daarbij ga ik waarschijnlijk drogenaaldtechniek, houtsnede en foam gebruiken.

So the new term has begun. During this minor we get to experiment with different kinds of printmaking. In the end, we are asked to present a series of six prints that represent a selfportrait or a personal manifesto. For the last few weeks I've been drawing myself and experimenting with the new techniques (click here for some small selfportraits I've uploaded recently). I decided to use a theme, and in my case it's "(un)comfortable". This represents the way in which I'm feeling comfy and self-assured in more and more situations, but that it's still up for improvement. I want the six prints to go together, to be a whole. I've decided I want to combine drypoint, woodcut and foam printing (although I'm not sure if that's the proper name for it).
